Rules For Working On A Car
You will get dirty
and have grease on your clothes. Besides that there are risks when
working on a car. Here are a few rules to follow:
|
|
 |
1. Do not smoke or
light a match while working on the car or even when raising the hood.
Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, especially if you are working under the
hood.
2. Remove all loose clothing such as ties or anything that could be
sucked into moving parts of the car. Long hair and jewelry can also be
dangerous so tie your hair back and remove your jewelry before working
on the car.
3. Be careful when cleaning up chemical or flammable liquids. Watch out
for slipping when working in areas that contain leaking fluids.
4. You can receive a shock from the car battery when working on the fuel
line or electrical system so disconnect the battery first. Just remove
the ground cable which is the one with the (-) sign on the battery
casing at the terminal.
5. It is easy to get a burn from the car battery because it contains
sulfuric acid. The battery also gives out hydrogen gas which can explode
so wear gloves and do not smoke.
6. Be careful when using a jack because it can collapse while holding up
the car. Do not ever crawl under a car that is jacked up unless you have
a jack stand. Do not substitute other items such as a buckets or
concrete blocks because these are not safe.
7. Wait for hoses, exhaust pipes, mufflers, and manifolds to cool off
before working on them. These car parts can be very hot so do not touch
them before they have had a chance to cool off.
8. If you need to remove the radiator cap wear gloves or use a rag and
NEVER remove the cap in one turn. Remove it slowly half a turn at a time
and when the steam is gone remove the cap the rest of the way. Keep your
face away from the cap and the steam.
9. If your car is under warranty and the problem appears to be serious,
call a tow truck. If you try to fix a major car part and are not
successful you could find the warranty void.
Some car repairs can be easily solved if you are careful and know what
to do......
